Good evening, readers, and welcome to my second guest article. A couple of you were offended by the alternative title of my last article. My intent with the piece was pure and good: to stress how much you should really, really hate traditional language methodology by using a controversial reference. But you know what? Over the weekend I ventured into the forest armed only with a mahogany cane and, while locked in mortal combat with a family of wolverines, realized that I had been a bit too harsh in my words. Thus, the astute reader will notice I requested that Ramses remove the reference. Though I still hate traditional learning with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, this issue is going to be classier than the Monopoly guy. I shall be too busy with excellence to point out another’s flaws. My top hat is cocked, and my monocle is fixed – let’s talk about what you should be doing instead of reading this drivel!
A GENTLEMAN’S ADVICE ON PICKING YOUR POISON

I. FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE AND STICK WITH IT
You’ve probably heard the stock advice given to language learners that you should stick to one type of newspaper article, one author, one genre, etc. when learning to read. The vocabulary repetition of sports articles, or detective novels, or any other subject is a great aid in keeping the dictionary down and the book in your hand. It makes sense. So why would watching television be any different? Trick question, Sherlock- It’s not!
When I first started learning French I decided to watch Lost because every mouth-breathing fan-boy slob gentleman scholar was telling me how awesome it was and how much I was missing out. It hit the point a few years ago where it was weird to be someone who didn’t watch it; it was like not having a facebook account. Which I don’t. Having to explain this to people got annoying, so I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and learn French while catching up on six seasons of this Lost show. This was the best move I could have made, and I didn’t realize why until recently.
Any TV show is going to establish a set of rules within its genre, and establish a limited number of locations, artifacts, etc. that will play into the story arcs. Lost takes place on an island, with a limited number of characters, and a limited supply of equipment. By necessity the vocabulary is limited and repeated ad nauseum until it is drilled into your language-loving head. Beach, water, food, forest, gun, plane, secret, hidden, lie, find, lost, others, where are you going, what are you doing, who are you, drop the gun, give it back, help me – you are dealing with a fairly limited matrix of props, locations, actions, and suggestions here. I believe that this is why, after six seasons of this show, I was able to go back to episode one and understand pretty much everything. I mastered the little world of this show.
After this experience I figured “Dude, I rock at French! Time to watch 24!” Guess what? I got totally wrecked. Had I forgotten my French just by switching shows? Of course not; I was just switching to a new television world, with new vocabulary, in a new genre. Just like switching authors, or novel genres, or types of newspaper articles, or whatever else you L2 readers can switch.
The moral of the story? Find a show you like that has multiple seasons and watch them all. When you get bored of the show, stop watching it, and don’t come back until you want to. I took a month-long break from Lost around season 5, when it started to get lame. I eventually came back just to see how it ended. I kind of wish I hadn’t. Zing!

II. LET THE INTERNET FIND MORE STUFF YOU LIKE
After a fine purebred foxhound, the internet is your greatest ally in sniffing out your game. Use language learning forums (for video) and websites that have ‘radio’ modes like Grooveshark (for audio) to find content that you might like based on content you already like. III. CARTOONS ARE THE UNIVERSAL DONOR
Watching dubbed TV can be kind of lame sometimes. But cartoons will never feel weird in another language, because 1) the mouths never completely matched up anyway, and 2) they’re filled with talking animals, aliens, and robots. They feel genuine because they were never meant to be realistic in the first place. Any language learner should snatch up their favorite Disney and Pixar movies on day one, followed by any animated series they might like. For instance, I used to love Batman: The Animated Series as a child, so I checked it out in French and found that it is still a great (if short) little show.
Cartoons also let you watch a lot of international films while studying your L2. I watched Waltz with Bashir and Ghost in the Shell recently, and I plan on watching Persepolis next. Eligible ladies prefer gentlemen who a) raise bloodhounds, and b) know their films. Pushups also help.

V. PODCASTS
Set your iTunes region to a country that speaks your L2. Filter the audio and video podcasts by popularity and grab a wide swath of them. You’re bound to find all sorts of pleasant voices and subjects that you find interesting, as well as a lot of material you find absolutely ear-grating. Keep the good, delete the bad, adjust your monocle, pose for an oil painting, then repeat. I suggest looking for both high-energy group podcasts, and quiet news-ish podcasts, so you always have material to suite your mood and location. In the car? Play a sports or comedy roundtable show. Listening while cooking? Play the news. Listening in bed? Play something quiet and soothing, like an audio book. Listening in bed with a woman? Play that “Fly like a G6” song.

VI. NATIVE MEDIA
This is pretty language-specific. Depending on your L2, the native media might be decent, or it might be garbage. It might be easy to find, it might be hard to find. To be frank, if you’re going from English to another language, you’re going to have to get used to watching shows that often pale in comparison to what you’re used to. Many American shows have production budgets larger than the GDP of a small country, and you’re probably not going to find that in your L2. For this reason, I watch a lot of dubbed content. As a disclaimer, there is “The McGurk Effect” (Google it) which may be an argument against relying on dubbed media, but that’s theoretical at this point. Like a painfully constrictive corset on a lady of marriage age, it just doesn’t bother me.
For French in particular, I had to get used to the idea that most of their movies are, well, mediocre. French filmography used to be pretty cool, but if you’re looking for anything from the last decade you have to scour Google for “best of” lists. Don’t get me wrong, most English movies are mediocre as well, and French movies are certainly more mature, but the difference is most French movies won’t be filled with special effects and blasting orchestral scores to distract you from their blandness. As far as television goes, I have yet to find a French TV show worth watching; on the flip side, their news programs are absolutely top notch and I often keep them streaming on a second monitor or on my TV.
One of you asked about specific native content that I like, so here are a few suggestions I would make to you if you were like me (do you own a menagerie?):
www.dpstream.net – For finding dubbed content, and some native French TV and movies.
Livestation – Download this software immediately. It provides a free, extremely high-quality stream of France 24 news. One of the first and best resources I’ve found.
Any “France Inter” podcast – Basically the NPR of France. Very high quality podcasts on news, culture, economics, sports, etc.
Warpzone par Jeuxvideo.fr – A humorous video podcast about videogames, filled with skits and all sorts of goofiness. Good for alleviating that French heaviness that pervades a lot of their media.
Grooveshark – Check out “BB Brunes” (fun rock music, kind of like Jet), Olivia Ruiz (a sexy, female Rufus Wainwright who also sings in Spanish), and “Keny Arkana” (an angry female rapper who has pretty epic music). Add all of their materials into your playlist, then turn on “radio” mode and you’re good to go.

“Best-Of” Lists – There are a lot of good French movies out there if you can find them. Scour these lists for material you might like.
“Gameblog.fr Podcast” – A videogame podcast where a bunch of 20-somethings shoot the breeze about new and retro games. Pretty upbeat, and filled with slang real people use (as opposed to news podcasts).
