Stick to one dialect, or you'll get stabbed with that flagpole!
Spanish is a great language, with a rich history, culture, and loads of dialects that are spoken throughout the modern world. To me, that certainly added to the amount of excitement I experienced when I discovered that one cool word that I had just learned meant something completely else in another part of the world (coger or tomar el autobús, anyone?). For many other learners it means hell on earth.
Don’t get me wrong, many people think it’s exciting that Spanish has many variants and dialects, but it also confuses them. And I can’t blame them. Why would someone think of having sex when talking about a bus? Still, that’s what happens if you use the Spanish (from Spain) sentence coger el autobús in Latin America. A Spaniard wouldn’t think about having sex, just about catching the bus. A Latino prefers using tomar instead of coger, just to avoid confusion.
That’s exactly the reason many learners stick to one dialect when they’re starting with Spanish, and I am their biggest supporter for making that decision. When starting to learn Spanish, you should stick to one dialect!
I’ve seen classmates struggle with both castellano and dominicano, just because they enjoyed music from the Dominican Republic but liked the Spanish dubbing of The Simpsons better. Can I blame them? No, I’ve done it myself. Still, I stayed away from Latino dubbing as it were a disease (not that I call Latino’s filthy or anything, I just don’t like the dubbing…). I preferred Dominican music, but was aiming for European Spanish pronunciation.
People who stick to one main dialect when they start learning a language generally have better pronunciation and also a better understanding of how the language works. Are these people smarter? Well, maybe only for choosing one dialect and sticking to it.
I have no scientific evidence that sticking to one dialect will make your pronunciation better, or give you a better grasp of the grammar and vocabulary of the language, but I’ve spoken with enough people to know this for sure (well, almost). People who stuck to one dialect are just better speakers of their target language!
That’s why I urge you to do the same. It doesn’t matter what dialect you choose as your target dialect, as long as you stay true to it. Don’t treat another dialect as your mistress, because it will bite you in the butt. Just like real life love affairs will come after you in the future. Don’t do it!
Of course it’s fun and good for your language skills to dive into the world of other dialects, but refrain from doing so until you have a good foundation in your target dialect. In other words: first become fluent, then have fun with other dialects.
I once knew a kid whose mother was French. She didn’t speak French to him, but her Dutch pronunciation was different than the standard pronunciation. He couldn’t pronounce the ‘h’ sound correctly, just as she couldn’t pronounce it correctly. Weird, huh? Weird because he grew up in a monolingual environment, and all of his friends were native speakers of Dutch. But I disgress. His Dutch accent was just off, because he had all these different influences.
Hearing different accents all the time messed up his accent. In the end the only way to get rid of his bad pronunciation was by going to a speech therapist.
You don’t want to be that poor French kid who grew up in the Netherlands with a messed up accent. You want to be that cool gringo or guiri who has acquired a perfect Spanish pronunciation.
After that it’s up to you what you’re going to do. I like to imitate Mexican and Dominican speakers while at parties. I can do that with average success, but my European Spanish pronunciation is spot on, just because I concentrated on that first.
Now, I don’t want to pat myself on the back. I know how much you hate it when I talk about how good I am, so I’ll just say that I suck at every other Spanish accent. And why is that? Because I concentrated on one dialect for my entire learning period.
If you concentrate on more than one dialect, especially in the beginning, you will speak no dialect with fluency after years of studying. Do you want that to happen, or do you want to rule in at least one dialect? No, don’t answer that question, you know there’s only one correct answer.
So what else to add… Nothing I guess…
Oh yes, there’s one thing:
Don’t be the French kid, he SUCKS DONKEY BALLS! No seriously, he literally does suck donkey balls. Disgusting, isn’t it?

If you already have a good base in learning Spanish, this course is ideal for you to correct any bad habbits you might have picked up in verb conjugation and progress to a level where you can speak and be understood effectively.</p>
