Government could force closure on Wightlink at Lymington

A minister of the goverment has sent a warning message to Wightlink, the company that runs the ferry service to the Isle of Wight from Lymington. Jaimes Paice, the government’s spokesman said that if they found the right evidence they would prevent the service from Lymington to the Isle of Wight. Southamption University were the first to point out the so-called damage to the salt marshes.
However, Andrew Turner, an Island MP, told the local press that he intended to fight any attempt to halt the service which was described as lifeline.
The comments came after New Forest West MP Desmond Swayne said Lymingtons salt marshes were eroding more swiftly because of the introduction of larger ferries.
The MP hightlighted a point made by the University of Southampton, claiming that the marshes would be growing and not dying off if they were left to nature.
Mr Paice said there was no clear scientific basis on which to support a decision to stop or suspend the ferry operation at the moment but if they received such evidence the government could issue a special nature conservation order to stop the service.
Mr Turner was quoted as saying If there were any threat to the ferry service then we would have a strong case to invoke the Europe Union Habitats Directive powers under the imperative reasons of over-riding public interest to show the need for the service outweighed the threat to the salt marshes,”.
A Wightlink spokeswoman said there was no evidence that the salt marshes would be growing were it not for ferries but they would continue to assess the impact of the new vessels.
She said the service was a vital link for the Island with significant economic and employment benefits. The service feeds vital industries including entertainment, with the Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival dependant on the supply of customers.
