Making sure that you have quality products for your oil painting is very important. You’ll have to get some brushes, paint, canvas, thinners and canvas primers. Is there any way to tell what quality your materials are? There is a learning curve associated with finding the right painting materials. Don’t take my word on buying materials, get whatever you are comfortable with.

When you pick a canvas, start with a size that feels right, try not to go too big. When you are talking about the quality, don’t focus on it too much in the beginning. Try not to go very cheap on canvas, because you might love your first paintings. The first thing you’ll have to do is prime the canvas for oil use.

Remember, get a quality brush, they are key to your success. Hog’s hair brushes work great with thick paints like oil paints. Just try all the different sizes and kinds of brushes till you find which one works for you. You’ll need a good thinner to clean your brushes between colors. And now the paints. When you are talking about oil pants, get quality. If you don’t want to spend too much on paints just yet, start with the primary colors.
