Teaching Yourself Spanish

To teach yourself Spanish as with any subject you try to learn by yourself determination will go a long way. While it can be easier to have another person teach you it is far more rewarding when you finish your studying to look back and know it was all thanks to your own personal effort and perseverance.

An easy way for you to start picking up some of the sounds and phrases of the Spanish language is to watch some Spanish TV or listen to some Spanish music. This is really helpful if you’re not too sure where to start when you teach yourself Spanish, as it’s easy to just flick on the TV or plug in your headphones without having to sit down and study.

The first time you listen or view any kind of Spanish speaking medium you are likely to find it very fast paced and you may struggle to pick out the words. The reason for this is that you aren’t able to comprehend any of the words. But you will find as you learn more words you will be able to pick out certain words either on TV or in Spanish music and your comprehension will increase.

Naturally you will not be able to teach yourself Spanish without the use of some form of Spanish course. It makes sense that in order to be able to comprehend another language, as an English speaker, you must be able to correctly identify a particular word or phrase in a sentence and then be able to translate it into English and this will expand your understanding of the Spanish language.

As mentioned at the start of the article when you teach yourself Spanish your success will be the result of your determination and perhaps more importantly your discipline. Studying for a minimum of half an hour every day will allow your brain to adapt to your new habit of learning Spanish. By writing down a routine or schedule you will be forcing yourself to take action and this is the only way you will successfully teach yourself Spanish.

On a side note when you write down a schedule with a time set aside, in which the only thing you will do is study to improve your Spanish, you will find it a lot easier to stick to as having something written down makes it much harder to avoid.

An extra tip that I find extremely effective is after each period of learning Spanish give yourself a score of how much effort you think you put in between 1 and 10. So if you were watching the TV whilst trying to study be honest and give yourself a lower effort score than if you did dedicated, concentrated study. This also will give you a standard to hold yourself to and ultimately help you to study more effectively.

Set yourself goals so that you can see whether or not you are actually making progress without relying on how you feel you are doing. Put the effort in to achieve your goals and remember that there is no such thing as an unreasonable goal just an unreasonable deadline. So if you don’t achieve a goal at the first time of asking don’t give up just keeping on putting the effort in and more the deadline back a few days. By staying dedicated you will teach yourself Spanish eventually.
