Thanks Darkfirecito for the feedback. I don’t think that IrKeNoVa’s explanation is correct (i.e. that it depends on whether the subject is known or not). That is not a relevant point or criterion.

Once an agent is specified, as introduced by “por”, the sentence structure is PASSIVE, in which case, I believe that “ser” (not “estar”) should be used (hence should be “FUE sacudida por problemas”).

Spanish grammar is very subtle!
